On this route, you will walk through forests and along the coast, past the majestic Valdemar's Castle and through the charming village of Troense. There is also an ice cream stop along the way, so you can enjoy a refreshing treat during your trip.

The roads of Valdemar's Castle

Most of the route follows the Øhavsstien trail and stretches over 13 km. If you prefer a shorter trip, you can take the veteran ferry M/S Helge home from Troense, which reduces the route to approximately 10 km.

The suggested route is based on Svendborg, where the trip starts (by bus).

Take the bus from Svendborg to Lundby. Get off at the petrol station, cross the road carefully and walk towards Tørvemosevej, where you will see a sign with a blue walking man on a pole. From here, follow the signs through Nørreskov, along the coast, behind Valdemars Slot and further through the forest.

Follow the road behind the castle, which takes you through a beautiful natural area to the old cloth factory from around 1750, where landowner Niels Juhl briefly ran a cloth factory to keep the women of the town busy when their skippers were out at sea.

From here, walk down Grønnegade and enjoy the sight and experience of what is perhaps Denmark's most charming country street, lined with listed half-timbered houses and beautiful front and back gardens. Most of the back gardens here are 5,000 m2 or more and filled with fruit trees. It was from here that the villagers used to transport apples and pears on fruit carts to Svendborg and further afield.

At the end of Grønnegade, you will find a small, cosy grocery store called Storms Hjørne, which is run by volunteers. Here you can enjoy an ice cream or buy refreshments – please note that it closes at lunchtime.

Vindeby

After your rest, continue through Troense, away from the harbour, and turn up Pilekrogen and into the forest. Continue straight ahead and walk through the small, charming district of Vindeby, from where there used to be a ferry to Svendborg.

Svendborgsund
Mikkel Ibman

Follow the Øhavsstien trail up onto the Svendborgsund Bridge and enjoy the spectacular view over Svendborgsund and Svendborg – the gateway to the archipelago. Follow the signs and head back towards the town centre.

Heading home on the water?

When you come out of the forest, instead of going straight ahead, turn right and down Vindebyørevej, where you can take the Helge vintage ferry at the end of the road by the campsite. Remember to check the timetable.
